I’d like to share the NPR Science Friday interview with Leonard Zon dedicated to recent study about direct transdifferentiation fibroblasts into cardiomyocytes.

I like his opinion on the highly discussed topic – reprogramming to pluripotency (iPS cell technology) versus direct transdifferentiation by defined factors. Importantly, he pointed out that disadvantage of both approaches is using genes which eventually can cause mutations. So, at this time point we don’t know which approach will be safer. I’d add that right now we even don’t know the reproducibility of direct trandifferentiation by defined factors unlike iPS cell technology.
